A Natural History of Cheating
Where there have been stakes, there have been loaded dice. This drawer catalogs fraud as a historical subject — what was done, who caught it, and what it teaches about the endless duel between cunning and fairness.
A note on the purpose of this drawer: nothing here is instruction. It is natural history — the documented record of how players have defrauded games across five thousand years, assembled because cheating is inseparable from gaming history: every anti-cheating device in a casino, every shuffle protocol, every sealed dice cup, is an archaeological layer left by some earlier crime. The cabinet files the fraud beside the game for the same reason museums file swords beside treaties.
The loaded bones
Fraud is as old as the astragalus. Archaeologists have recovered Roman dice visibly manipulated — weighted with iron or mercury cores, subtly non-cubic, or duplicated on their faces (two sixes, no one) — and statistical surveys of hundreds of Roman dice have shown systematic asymmetries that shift the odds measurably. The ancients knew it too: loaded dice appear in Greek comedy as a stock villain’s prop, and Roman law penalized the false die alongside the false weight. The dice tower of Vettweiss — a handsome bronze-laced turret with internal steps and bells, meant to tumble the dice beyond any gentleman’s fingers — is fairness engineered in the fourth century CE, the first known anti-cheating device. Cardsharps: the early modern profession
When playing cards swept Europe in the 1370s, the cheat went professional within a generation. By the 1500s there existed a whole literature of exposure — Girolamo Cardano himself wrote a chapter on cheating in the book that founded probability (see the pioneers drawer), and Reginald Scot’s English catalogue of 1584 catalogued card and dice ruses among its conjuring tricks; by the 1600s, French pamphlets and English “blackleg” ballads named the standard repertory: marked backs read by candle-position, trimmed corners, palmed cards, stacked decks, the accomplice who drinks with the mark. Caravaggio’s The Cardsharps (c. 1594) painted the trade with such accuracy that the canvas counts as a documentary source — the cheat’s dagged sleeve is built to hide a palmed card (see the arts drawer).

Faro: the game that ate the frontier
Nineteenth-century America’s national game was faro — fast, simple, banked — and its history is the great case study of institutionalized fraud. Because the faro bank required the house to run the apparatus (the dealing box and the case-keeper’s counters), cheats and operators fused: “brace” faro banks dealt seconds from rigged boxes; dealers’ sleights decided elections of local fortune in every mining camp; and the profession’s notoriety — gathered later in Herbert Asbury’s urban histories — grew so infamous that faro’s death around 1900 was less a ban than a reputation collapse. The honest player’s answer, the dealing box patented and sealed, is another layer of engineering deposited by crime.
Wheels within wheels
Roulette fraud runs from the microscopic to the magnificent. Wheels were greased, frets lifted, balls magnetized — the classic Victorian crooked-house tricks catalogued in the era’s scandal memoirs. Against the honest house, players aimed at physics rather than fraud: in 1873 the mill engineer Joseph Jagger hired clerks to clock the wheels of Monte-Carlo, found a biased one, and extracted a fortune before the casino varied wheel rotation — a story the house treated as sharp practice and history treats as applied statistics. A century later the Eudaemons — physics graduate students in Santa Cruz — went further, hiding a computer in a shoe to time ball and wheel and predict the landing sector; they retired with modest winnings and published the story themselves. Whether such play is cheating or merely skill has kept philosophers, lawyers and casino security busy ever since; what is certain is whose arithmetic probability theory ultimately serves in a fair game — the house’s.
The modern duel
The 20th century industrialized both sides. Card counters at blackjack — analyzed statistically from the 1950s (the “Four Horsemen of Aberdeen” study, then Edward Thorp’s 1962 Beat the Dealer) — forced the casinos to invent multi-deck shoes, shuffle machines, and the polite invitation to leave; marked-card collusion met the Angel Eye and chip-reading surveillance; online play bred its own arms race of RNG auditing and bot detection. The duel’s structure, however, is as old as the weighted astragalus: every game defines a space of permitted action, every era’s cheats probe its edges, and the defenses they provoke become the standard furniture of the next century’s honest game. That dialectic — crime producing fairness — is the drawer’s final exhibit, and the reason the natural history of cheating belongs in a cabinet of curiosities rather than a courtroom.
What this history is for
Documented fraud teaches two things worth keeping. First, the history of fair play is largely the history of fraud prevention — from the Vettweiss tower to the sealed dealing box to the audited random number generator. Second, the cheat’s constant underlying assumption, that the game can be beaten by information or manipulation, is the same assumption the honest strategist makes; only consent separates them — a line the doubling cube player and the cardsharp draw differently.
